Chosen by The New York Times as one of the ten best books ever written about the city.
In the summer of 1949, E.B. White sat in a New York City hotel room and, sweltering in the summer heat, wrote a remarkable, pristine essay, Here Is New York. Perceptive, funny, and nostalgic, the author’s stroll around Manhattan — with the reader arm-in-arm — remains the quintessential love letter to the city, written by one of America’s foremost literary figures. Like most of White’s prose (his essays, his “Talk of the Town” columns, The Elements of Style), this book is of modest length. Yet, like Charlotte’s Web, it speaks more eloquently about what lasts and what really matters than other, more expansive pieces. The New York Times has chosen Here Is New York as one of the ten best books ever written about the grand metropolis. The New Yorker calls it “the wittiest essay, and one of the most perceptive, ever done on the city.” This edition of Here Is New York marks the 100th anniversary of E.B. White’s birth, and appears with a new introduction by Roger Angell.”On any person who desires such queer prizes, New York will bestow the gift of loneliness and the gift of privacy.” So begins E.B. White’s classic meditation on that noisiest, most public of American cities. Written during the summer of 1948, well after the author and editor had taken up permanent residence in Maine, Here Is New York is a fond glance back at the city of his youth, when White was one of the “young worshipful beginners” who give New York its passionate character. It’s also a tribute to the sheer implausibility of the place–the tangled infrastructure, the teeming humanity, the dearth of air and light. Much has changed since White wrote this essay, yet in a city “both changeless and changing” there are things here that will doubtless ring equally true 100 years from now. To wit, “New Yorkers temperamentally do not crave comfort and convenience–if they did they would live elsewhere.”

Anyone who’s ever cherished his essays–or even Charlotte’s Web–knows that White is the most elegant of all possible stylists. There’s not a sentence here that does not make itself felt right down to the reader’s very bones. What would the author make of Giuliani’s New York? Or of Times Square, Disney-style? It’s hard to say for sure. But not even Planet Hollywood could ruin White’s abiding sense of wonder: “The city is like poetry: it compresses all life … into a small island and adds music and the accompaniment of internal engines.” This lovely new edition marks the 100th anniversary of E.B. White’s birth–cause for celebration indeed. –Mary Park

New York Habitat’s Top 5 New York City Churches

Are you planning a trip to New York City? Find a great vacation rental with New York Habitat. While your visiting New York there are plenty of things to do and sights to see. Many people come to New York City to see the world famous churches. Here are the top 5 must-see churches in New York City. Try to visit them while staying in a New York Habitat furnished apartment rental.

Visit the New York Habitat Blog to read more about each of these churches and find out why you should see them all on your next visit to New York City.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Midtown Manhattan is perhaps the most well-known church in all of New York, or North America for that matter. The Neo Gothic cathedral rivals the likes of Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral in its gothic grandeur and standing within the city’s architectural lexicon. St. Patrick’s is the head of the New York Catholic church, acting as the seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, and the structure plays a vital role as both a symbol of Catholic New York (particularly Irish Catholic) and as an active place of worship. Today’s church has become a bona-fide tourist attraction for both its location across from Rockefeller Center and its remarkable architecture.

St. Paul’s Chapel

One of the most indelible images of downtown Manhattan in the days following the attacks of September 11th was that of the dust covered St. Paul’s Chapel standing defiantly in what was once the shadow of the World Trade Center. The quaint chapel, located literally steps from the footprint of the towers survived the attack remarkably unscathed. Images of the chapel quickly gained recognition around the world as a symbol of fortitude and strength during the city’s greatest tragedy. The church’s role in 9/11 tells only a small fraction of the chapel’s history, one dating all the way back to 1766.

Riverside Church

The Riverside Church stands like a beacon at the northern end of Manhattan island. In a city filled with skyscraping buildings the Gothic masterpiece still manages to stand tall. In fact, the Riverside Church is the tallest church in the entire United States and is currently the 26th tallest in the world. More than just a large structure, the Riverside Church has acted as a longtime sanctuary and celebratory hall for generations of Harlemites. Indeed, the church is known as much for its activism and community involvement as it is for its towering steeple.

Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine

As mass immigration flooded New York towards the turn of the 20th century, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine was started in 1892 with the idea that it would become a house of prayer for all nations. The consequent construction of the church was halted by two World Wars, numerous design alterations and more recently a large fire that closed the building for several years. Still, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine remains one of New York’s finest religious structures, despite the small fact that the building officially remains unfinished more than a century from when it was started.

Trinity Church Wall Street

Located at the intersection of Wall Street and Broadway in the Financial District,Trinity Church has been at the heart of a changing New York for centuries. The old pillar of the rapidly changing neighborhood represents a Downtown New York that no longer exists, one in which this district was not only the financial hub of the city, but also the communal and spiritual center of New York.

Families are flocking to New York City. And the kids are helping in planning the vacation. Some 65 percent of the shoppers at the Times Square Toys “R” Us are out-of-towners, according to a company spokesman. Some visitors even make the giant toy store their first stop. Judging by the crowds of out-of-town visitors snapping photographs at the Ferris wheel and Lego Empire State Building located inside the store, it’s clear that families love New York.

“We felt like it was our patriotic duty to come,” said Bona Christison, who was chaperoning a group of teens from a University of Utah youth theater group.

“Compared to a day at Disneyland, you spend less and there’s more to do,” said Southern Californian Albert Katz.

Mary DeFeo, 16, persuaded her parents to bring her and her friend to New York to celebrate her 16th birthday–their first trip to the Big Apple. “Shopping is their main thing,” said Mary’s mom, Jennifer DeFeo, a Rhode Island schoolteacher.

Kids love what they have always loved about New York: “Looking at all the different people,” says 14-year-old Cassie Crockett, part of the theater group from Utah.
“The subways,” offered 7-year-old Erin Katz, of Southern California.
“Seeing so many big buildings,” said Alex Bradley, who doesn’t see many of them near his home in New Smyrna, Florida.

The Kid’s Guide to New York City explores the Big Apple by neighborhood, supplying essential background information as well as kid-tested tips on where to go and what to see. Fun facts and tips from native New Yorkers on each neighborhood’s best site, snack, and souvenir are also included.

Travel to New York This Summer

All eyes are on New York this week as the Sex and the City film premieres here in London.

Travel experts believe that the film will attract many British tourists to New York as they see the beautiful setting of the film. Fans of Sex and the City can now also do tours where they visit the locations of famous scenes from the series and the movie.

The New York tourist board, NYC and company, are keen to use this opportunity to remind tourists that New York does not have to be a winter destination.

Many consider New York a winter destination, picturing snowy scenes and shopping experiences in one of the most famous cities in the world.

But New York can offer a fabulous summer holiday to those who venture there in the warm summer months. With an average summer temperature of 29 degrees celsius and an abundance parks and outdoor pools, New York is a real summer treat.

Commenting on some of the city’s best attractions, NYC & Company chief George Fertitta said: “Easily reachable by subway, Coney Island offers sun-worshipping on the beach, a dolphin show, and carnival rides, while the Brooklyn Museum of Art is home to one of the world’s best Egyptian collections.”

With over a million British tourists visiting New York each year the city is already a highly popular destination, although not enough people consider it a summer break.

In addition to its many attractions, New York is one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Whatever precautions you take, travelling to New York, you are at risk of being the victim of a crime.

The most common type of crime, especially for tourists, is mugging and theft. To protect against occurrences such as this ruining your holiday, make sure you have travel insurance before you fly.
