Review by Richard C. Yeh for Frommer’s New York City Day by Day (Frommer’s Day by Day – Pocket)

Living in New York, I checked the prior edition of this book out of the public library and followed its suggestions for several delightful walks through the city. Both editions start with ideas of what to do if you are short on time, which is appropriate for time-limited trips to Manhattan. When I flipped through the second edition (2009) in Borders last weekend, I looked forward to seeing what had changed.
Unfortunately, the Chelsea walk still directs you to the Wild Lily Tea Room, where, at http://www.wildlilytearoom.com/ (noted in the book), they say “The Wild Lily Tea Room closed its door in Chelsea on December 24, 2006 due to an exorbitant rent increase.” (On Amazon, you can search inside the first edition to see that text.)
One of the dining maps had numbers at locations which were not listed in the legend/key!
It’s not clear whether much else in the book has changed. I need to take a closer look.

Please note that the 2009 publication of Day by Day does not have up-to-date information for Fraunces Tavern Museum. The Museum’s current admission prices are $10 for adults, $5 for Seniors, Students w/ id and children 6-18. Children under 5 are free.

Whether it’s your first time going or you’re going with someone for the third time and want to know what you really DON’T want to miss, this book is perfect for you. I’ve been in NYC a few times before and I always ended up seeing the same things, following the same people. This time, however, we actually saw a lot of things worth seeing, and it takes the planning pains out of it. All you need to know is this: Review/scan the book, decide on one of its pre-designed trips (could be full day, trips, romantic, museums, etc) and this book will tell you how to do it. Pressure is off!
I didn’t expect the prices to be accurate 100% though, as times change, but it was surprisingly useful in giving us an idea of how much we would spend here and there.

This is a great travel book to carry with you through the city. We actually purchased it in conjunction with one of the map books. It highlights some restaurants, stores, sights and lets you find them by area of the city (which is great when you’re in one area of NY and hungry–nothing worse than saying, ooh this sounds good, but it’s on the other side of the city).

I have used Frommer’s guides before, but the size, pictures, and detailed descriptions include all the things you will need. If you are looking for an extensive hotel list, this will not have it. I would go to the full Frommer’s guide for that. But if you have lodging taken care of and know where you would like to stay, this is the guide for you. Maps were terrific.
