This is the second time I got burned by a book like this. Unless you really cannot use google, you will find this book pretty much useless. I got a new job in the vicinity of NY and decided I wanted to live somehwere in Queens and commute to my new job. So I bought this book to help me find where to live in Queens and how to navigate the NYC rental system. On the first question, it scored miserably. There are in total 6 paragraphs devoted to Queens, mentioning Long Island City, Astoria and Jackson Heights. These fit into 9 pages, which also include some plots and tables, but this gives you the idea about white-space in this book. The book could have easily been condensed from 450 pages to about 100 pages. In comparison, Lonely planet NYC has also 8 pages dedicated to queens, but actually gives you much more information about where you want to live and describe, in addition to the above mentioned neighbourhoods also Sunnyside, Woodside, Flushing, Corona, Jamaica and Rockaway beach. So basically, the book under review missed 70% of the relevant neighbourhoods of a part of NYC which is 10 mins by train from Manhattan. And there are useless graphs like pie charts of male/female ratio which are exactly the same for 90% of neighbourhoods. There are no useful maps of the city that would make it easy to visualise where which neighbhood is for a uninitiated, there are no maps of subway system, no LIRR or anything like that… There are pages and pages of filler stuff, like lists of realtors or theatres, etc., but come on, I can google for realtors in NYC. There are sections on generic moving fluff, something that really shouldn’t go into a book about moving to NY (as opposed to a general book on moving for idiots). Basically I expected something like a guidebook to NY with focus on new residents rather than tourists and instead I got mostly filler fluff, tables copied from internet and generic descriptions of how one should move. There were a couple of useful pages describing the differences between co-op and condos and broker/no broker renting, and two useful links about searching for a flat but this is about all useful information I got from this book. If you are moving to New York, get lonely planet NYC, go googling and save yourself a couple of bucks…
